Spring Tennis Leagues
The spring season will start the week of March 1st and will end on May 21st. Doubles play for ladies, men, and mixed are offered on weeknights. Doubles for ladies are available Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings as well, and we have a coed singles ladder. Registrations for these leagues must be received by February 20th. Please remember to include your annual membership when you pay for these leagues.
Our annual Christmas party was held December 5th. Numerous attendees enjoyed Smokey Mos barbeque, beverages, games, and prizes. League prizes were awarded to the first and second place finishers from the fall leagues. Our annual business meeting was held after dinner. A vote was held for open board positions, resulting in Jimmy Jackson being elected President, Don Hughes elected Vice President, and Jack Catcott elected Secretary. Many thanks to Tom Cox for serving as President for the past two years. Thanks are also due to Sammie Courington for donating five racquet-stringing jobs as door prizes

Did you know that a volunteer Board of Directors, which ideally consists of 5 officers and a minimum of 8 at-large members, runs your RRTA? Most members usually hold their position for at least 2 years, and attend meetings approximately once each quarter to facilitate the upcoming leagues, make arrangements for any upcoming events, and discuss all business concerning the association. Many of the current Board members have served the association's interests for many, many years in one capacity or another, so we are looking for new volunteers! If you would like to join the Board, or would like to find out more about what is involved, please send a message to the e-mail link on our website and a Board member will reply ASAP.

For those who missed out, the annual 2002 Christmas party was held December 6th at the SPJST Hall, featuring lots of great food and drinks, Jenga and bingo games, and lots of great tennis prizes. Be sure to plan ahead to attend the first Friday of December each year. It was lots of fun again! We had a special recognition for previous RRTA board members to honor our 20th anniversary. Thanks to everyone who attended, and we hope you had a good time, too.

2002 August Newsletter
The Fall Season will be September 9th through November 22nd. The deadline to register for doubles leagues is August 31st. Please send in your application early, especially if you are signing up for mixed doubles because that league fills quickly. See our application page for membership and league fees. Please enter your email address on the application so you may be contacted via Internet, and sign up as a substitute for doubles if you can.
RRTA is considering a rotating mixed doubles league on Wednesday nights. Unlike the "fixed" mixed-gender doubles format on Thursday nights, male and female players would switch partners to form a different co-ed team each set and players would track their scores individually. You would not need a partner to sign up. Anyone interested in playing this proposed league should send an email or call Marsha at 255-9819.
The windscreens at Settler's Park (which we purchased at huge expense) had been returned to the manufacturer for modifications but unfortunately they were lost in shipping. The city has filed with the insurer of the shipping company and has ordered new windscreens. Were not sure when they will actually be back up on the courts. Judging from our previous experiences it may be quite some time.
News flash! We are now informed that the wind screens will be reinstalled starting on August 21, 2002!!! (Per Robert Vasquez, RR Parks & Rec).
The benches were installed and they are greatly appreciated. RRTA has offered to pay for approximately half of the cost of the benches.
There will be a mixer on Friday evening, September 6th at the Old Settlers Courts from 7:00pm to 10:00pm. It will be our usual fun tennis party and all Association members, spouses, etc. are invited. Please come out and meet the other players in our club. RRTA will provide refreshments and appetizers. There will be an organized mixed-doubles format so be ready to play. Prizes will be given throughout the evening. Winners of the Summer Leagues will be announced and prizes awarded. You do not want to miss this!
The Christmas Party will be on Friday, December 6th at SPJST Hall. Please mark your calendar. More to come in the November Newsletter.

The windscreens at Settler's Park (which we purchased at huge expense) have been returned to the manufacturer to have cut-outs put in and they should be reinstalled by mid-June. The benches are to be installed when the drainage work is complete.
Many of our RRTA players were in San Antonio last weekend for USTA Sectionals. Congratulations to everyone who participated in the Senior Sectional Championships. There will be a mixer on Friday evening, June 7th from 7:00pm to 10:00pm at the Old Settlers Courts. RRTA will provide drinks and appetizers. There will be an organized mixed-doubles format. A letter from the President
Feb. 27, 2002 - I talked to Mr. James Jimenez, RR Parks and Rec Planning Director, about the delay in installing the benches at the tennis center. Mr. Jimenez informed me that the RR Parks and Rec have decided to award the installation of the benches to the contractor who constructed the tennis courts so that the installation would be covered by the warranty. The contractor is also being required to fix the drainage at the courts. This contract is to be awarded the 4th week of March at the Council Meeting. The installation should commence shortly thereafter. Tom
Dec. 26, 2002 - Per directions of the RRTA Board of Directors, I contacted the RR City Parks & Rec Department on Thursday, January 24th and spoke to Park Planner, Mr. James Hearers.
1) Regarding the benches, he informed me that the benches are either here or on the way. He is going to call the construction people to find out when they are going to be installed and get back to me. I havent heard back from him yet. I will follow up next week.
2) Regarding the mud on the courts, they are working with the original contractor about the drainage problems. That work should be completed no later than March.
3) Regarding landscaping, there are no immediate plans.
4) Regarding restrooms, there are plans for a swimming area with bathroom facilities at the top of the hill above the tennis courts (long range but within the next 3 years).
5) Regarding a tennis facility pro shop, restrooms and viewing bleachers for a tournament court, there is a long range plan but they have no money and no bond issues were passed for these items.
Please call or send me a message if you have any questions.

Vice President Richard Beavers
Treasurer Marsha Pearson
Secretary Sandra Smith
Members At Large Elaine Cox, Jodi Goike, Bill Carter, Jack Catcott, Vicky Champion
If you would be interested in serving on the board please contact Tom Cox at 246-6689.
Tom Cox is communicating with the city about improving the landscaping around the courts. Were interested in stopping the mud flowing on the courts after heavy rains. Were also inquiring about the purchase of picnic tables. The city has already ordered benches for the courts and they should be coming in soon.
www.rrtennis.com is the place to go for any updated information on the association. Many thanks again to Bill Carter for our awesome website!
Scoring for Substitute Players
Remember new ruling for subs: Doubles play will deduct 2 points per person for a sub limited to 3 points total per fixed team. If a fixed team with one sub has the highest points minus their deduction of 2, they may advance to the next court. However if the fixed team has two subs they may not advance regardless of the score. Any team with a sub will automatically lose a tie-break.
Look for news about an exciting upcoming members tournament in the next newsletter!

Round Rock/Anderson Mill Challenge Match
The Round Rock team defeated Anderson Mill this year with 12 matches won and 6 lost. The competition was fierce and the weather was excellent (maybe a little warm). We were delighted to see our AM friends, many of whom we have played tennis with for years. The new court facilities gave us plenty of room to work with. It was tremendous fun. We all look forward to the next match, maybe we can do this more often than just once a year?
The wind screens have now been fully installed and they make a big difference. Next project is benches. The RRTA is working with the city Parks and Rec department to select and purchase some.
2001 August Newsletter
The fall season will run from September 10th to November 29th with the first week of December as a make up date just in case we have any rain outs. There will be no scheduled play the week of Thanksgiving. Applications for the fall leagues are due by September 4th.
RRTA has purchased wind screens for the Settler's Park courts and they should be installed by the time the fall season begins. We have also asked the City to provide benches for the courts and RRTA will reimburse the City or make a donation to pay for the benches.
The web site @ www.rrtennis.com has generated interest and the fall league should have more new members. The new courts have finally made it possible to expand the leagues and hopefully have an even more social and competitive tennis experience for our members. If anyone has any suggestions or comments please send us an email.
A Challenge Match with the Anderson Mill Tennis Association (AMTA) is scheduled for Saturday September 15th from 8:00am-1:00pm at the Round Rock courts. We will play six (6) courts each of womens, mens and mixed doubles. The last two years AMTA has won but this year we have home court advantage. Women interested in playing should contact Marsha Pearson at 255-9819. Men and mixed participants should contact Jack Catcott at 310-8725. Even if you dont get to play, feel free to come by and cheer for your association. We want the trophy back! Food and drinks will be provided.
The Christmas Party should be December 7th. Watch the web site for details.
